What to do in Chicago this Weekend
Even though summer is almost over, that doesn’t mean the festivities have to end so soon. We’ve put together a list of perfect places around Chicago to escape for the rest of the day after spending the morning shopping at West Lake Market.
West Lake Market
From skincare products and jewelry, to fresh bouquets, clothing and furniture — local products will adorn the street and offer an exclusive day of shopping in the West Loop, with plenty of free street parking available. The West Lake Market takes inspiration from markets across the globe, incorporating unique vendors and family activities to create a wonderful, admission-free, family friendly Sunday Funday for all. Open this Sunday from 10am – 2pm
Millennium Park
One of the city’s most popular attractions, Millennium Park is located in the Loop and includes views of the lake and skyline. In the summer, free concerts and movies are put on at the Pritzker Pavilion, meaning it’s the perfect place to sprawl out on the lawn with a basket of food and enjoy a good show.
Oak Street Beach
Underneath the dizzying heights of the John Hancock Center is Oak Street Beach, home to the sandy shores of Lake Michigan and maybe even a surfer or two. While the beach is just steps from downtown, laying out a large towel and relaxing by the water with fruit and veggies to snack on is hard to beat.
Lincoln Park
Nestled between Lake Michigan and Lake Shore Drive, Lincoln Park spans a large swath of the North Side as Chicago’s largest park. After spending a day at the zoo or conservatory, (both of which are free) place a blanket on one of the many great lawns and enjoy a sunny picnic with a smoked chicken salad and freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore
While this location isn’t within city limits, the Indiana Dunes are a quick drive or Metra trip away in Westchester Township and display a great view of the Chicago skyline. The serene nature preserve offers a nice day away from the bustle of the city and provides lots of quiet to enjoy alongside a couscous salad and some sliced pineapple for dessert.
Baha’i House of Worship
If the idea of leaving the city and driving a car is a bit much for your quick summer trip, but you still want access to some peace and quiet, look no further than the Baha’i House of Worship. Located just off the Linden Purple Line stop in Wilmette, the Baha’i temple is a beautiful building with equally gorgeous gardens. A quick but meaningful summer picnic is possible here, and it’s super easy to head back down to the city on the CTA.
